Purpose
To determine the most impactful causes upon which action can be taken.

Once this step is completed, you will have collected data on potential causes of the problem so that they can be ranked in order of most impact.
How to do it
Use a checksheet to gather data about a potential cause.
It may be appropriate to use a runchart to look at the pattern and shape of the data over time to determine whether there are any patterns occurring (eg change of shifts, high freight days). Use a control chart to see if a process is stable or unstable.
